Ikea Hacks

Ikea Hacks

When we moved from our unit to our house we needed furniture so we went to Ikea and bought some blue book shelves. It gets to a point where you just need to change your furniture so we have seen all these blogs and pictures on Pinterest about Ikea Hacks. We thought why not and if we don't like it well we buy some new shelves.

So the first step was to wipe it down and then give it a light sand.

Use the finest sandpaper you can get, then wipe it again. The only Laminate primer we could get is White Knight and it is very watery as it is water based so it wipes off easily if you get it on you. We let it dry for a couple of hours. Because it was really hot it did not take long to dry.

The next step was to use the White knight Laminate paint. We got it tinted black so we could match our other dark furniture. Laminate paint is very thick and heavy, it also stinks really bad so make sure you have ventilation...

It takes a long time to dry so make sure you give it a couple of days.
Kim really wanted to put laminate wood on the side, so we measured the sides and went to our local hardware supplier and got them to cut the sizes we needed.

We then oiled the wood to give it deeper colours, we had oil from Ikea so we just used that.

After letting that dry for a few hours it was time to glue it to the shelves.

We glued the wood to the shelves and used heavy boxed to weigh it down.

The finished project.

We are happy with what we did.
Have you ever tried to do this? Paint your furniture or anything like that?

  1. Good job. I've painted chairs and bookshelves but they rarely look this nice.
